An image of the main concourse of Grand Central Terminal in New York. Commuters bustle around the iconic brass clock under high arched windows and stone columns awash in golden light. The ceiling has mysteriously vanished, leaving a dramatic view of a night sky with luminous clouds and the bright stars beyond. The high barrel-vaulted ceiling of Grand Central features a beautiful mural of the 12 zodiac constellations, but I thought real stars might be even better, so I replaced it with a sky photo that I shot in northern Idaho on a clear summer evening. I had two literary quotes in mind as I did this. The first is a passage from Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are,” in which a forest grows in Max’s room until “the walls became the world all around.” The second is from Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001,” in which David Bowman enters the alien artifact known as the Monolith and discovers its nature: “It was some kind of cosmic switching device, routing the traffic of the stars through unimaginable dimensions of space and time. He was passing through a Grand Central Station of the galaxy.” I liked the idea of juxtaposing different scales of distance — the great distances covered by travelers on land, and the vastly greater distances traversed by starlight up above — and using Grand Central as an image to tie them together. Hopefully it works. Edited using the double exposure tool in Snapseed.
