Who needs a quantum cliff when the numbskulls add journalists to their top secret Signal chats all by themselves?

The only other entity that could have added the journalist, barring greater compromise of their devices (remote access), is Signal. Something tells me they didn’t do that given Signal would go from however many people they have using their service to roughly zero overnight if it ever came out that they did. So, yeah, one of the blockheads in the group added the journalist.
