Wonderful, wonderful, sweet, slow and thoughtful interview with Robert Picardo (Emergency Medical Hologram on "Star Trek: Voyager" 30 years ago) on entering the Star Trek family and lifelong commitment, living the Star Trek life, and on being the bridge between the past and future of the franchise in the upcoming "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy", which may come out early 2026.

@gemlog "Anyone who can fold a fitted sheet is a powerful witch" :-)

Well done on finding the OneRNG schematic too!

@gemlog mmm I've been trying to get used to logseq, which is less cloud-available by default but can probably end up with a similar feature set. What do you find nice about joplin?

CMDR Yojimbosan ⁂
@gemlog Well, I was more interested in what the front-end functionality is like to use, along with just an assertion that the back-end can do "the right thing" if asked nicely :-)

@gemlog I still write naturally in a usenet/email style that's very similar to what got encoded as 'markdown'; I prefer just text that I can work on with any tool ... but I really like a good UI that helps structure things well.

So logseq, obsidian, zim, and even for a while Roam - Roam's UI was excellently responsive, but I don't like the difficult-to-own data store for it.

@gemlog Can you use diagram languages? I've been using graphviz inline in wikis for years, it's a really good outcome to have the diagram available as searchable text ...

@gemlog Oh, I just didn't recognise 'mermaid' as exactly one of those tools :-)

@gemlog I don't think I have specific "needs" - I'm still happy with paper notbooks for example, which are great for about a 2-week range and not much use for longer (unless you aggressively organise and index them I guess)

I'd like to have long-term structured notes on all the tech things I come across, so a lot of what I need is discoverability for old things, which these tools give me. Then I need to actually enjoy using it enough that I'm motivated to use it more, until there's a critical mass of data there and a reason to keep on going :-)

@gemlog Linuxes mostly, it might be useful to have an android phone hooked up. Sometimes Windows gets run.

For $dayjob it's macos and ios, but I won't mix personal data with work devices if I can avoid it.

@gemlog You have a couple of handfuls more years than I do :-) but I can no longer be bothered trying to type on anything except a keyboard, and I was spoiled in my youth by the ZX81 (in a negative way) and the BBC Micro so ... mechanical kbd ftw.
in reply to CMDR Yojimbosan ⁂

@yojimbo I can't be aresed to use anything but a real keyboard! :-)
I use graffiti on phones ala palmos. I don't use on screen keyboards.
And, yes, I did have a zx81 :-)
in reply to CMDR Yojimbosan ⁂

@yojimbo Just to add one thing: I join you in hating membrane keyboards like Uncle Clive's. Horrible. Nasty things.
in reply to Kermode

@gemlog I loved my ZX81 and still have it (hasn't been powered up in years though). Wonderful device. Still hate the kbd. RAM-pack wobble blues and sore fingertips.

@yojimbo Oh! You rich folk! You had extra ram! Wow!
That was back in the days when we were evicted from our 'ole in the ground; we 'ad to go and live in a lake!
I could tell you a story... ;-)

@gemlog For many years I've been able to rely on my memory, which has been pretty good at noticing a connection, and helping me find the reference/source.

However, covid didn't do my brain too many favours, so I need to get some habits around being intentional with saving stuff in external memory; that's basically why I'm interested in how people are using tools like these. Thanks for your comments; I don't need the details of your organisation system, but talking about how you got there is good.

Also, "amiga dealer" sounds like a great t-shirt to wear underneath a long trenchcoat, pockets full of 3.5" disks and midi cables ...
