Dorothy Alison's “Bastard Out of Carolina” stands apart from the "poornography" genre—stories about poverty written by outsiders, according to University of Chicago English professor Leonard Davis.

Allison, who passed away on November 5, drew deeply from her own impoverished childhood to create a raw, authentic world that never lost its gritty roots.
