“For many people, especially those leaning left, Donald Trump’s disqualifications to be president seem obvious,” according to an anthropologist who spent time talking to Trump voters to understand why this wasn’t obvious to 72 million people.

I find it really bizarre to claim that "people have thoughtful reasons for voting for Trump" and then follow it up with five mostly thoughtless reasons. Take the first reason, for example. Accepting what Trump says on its face and rejecting all efforts to fact-check him is thoughtless on its face. This way of thinking does not permit reality to impose any constraint on belief. The fifth reason is just as bad -- wanting destruction for its own sake.

I want to say just one more thing (sorry). This piece asserts that "Trump's base cannot simply be dismissed as racist," then goes on to give five reasons that can be summarized as: (1) some reject truth-seeking, (2) some care more about inflation than authoritarianism, (3) some channel their racism into over-the-top fury about illegal immigration, (4) some blame the sitting vice president for the Ukraine and Gaza wars, and (5) some just want to see the world burn.
