It took me about 2 days to transfer over 250 GB of photos from Google Photos to @pixelunion with their migration tool. Now my photos are safe and sound in Europe.

The face recognition works even better than Google's, and Immich is an awesome piece of software. I would have hosted this entirely on my own like my Nextcloud, but paying a couple of bucks for 450 GB of storage and a fast server is a real bargain and saves me the hassle. Well done, PixelUnion!

I use Synology Photos which works great. Why are you not using Nextcloud Photos? Thanks for the tip about Pixelunion

I do have my photos in Nextcloud Photos, at least since I switched to Nextcloud. But I had photos in Google Photos going back to 1999, and moving them to Nextcloud is a pain. PixelUnion has a Google Photos migrator tool that makes the transfer really easy. Plus, Immich has way more features and a better UI than Nextcloud Photos. @pixelunion

@kofzmann Oh, and the best part: Google Photos metadata, albums, places, and everything else moved too. This isn't easily possible with Nextcloud, as far as I know. @pixelunion

However, Nextcloud requires technical server expertise to install. I only know a few managed Nextcloud providers, though I have no personal experience with them.

(Edit: Actually, @hetzner is something I use for servers, and it looks like they do offer managed Nextcloud: hetzner.com/storage/storage-sh…)

Huge thanks for this. When I was in crisis over a two-year loss of photos (recovered, whew) I couldn't find the sort of backup solution I was looking for and went with photobucket just to hurry up and backup. This looks much better and am getting set up now.
