@ireneista @mclare @pluralistic I'm aware

but getting data mined for a product that is foundationally about estranging nursing mothers from their children (and that gave me personally several very painful cases of mastitis) so they can participate in this capitalist shitshow is SO fucked up

adding insult to injury

anyhow hang in there OP I hope you and the baby are doing as well as you can given all the fuckery

It is the epitome of @pluralistic #enshittification that to access all the features of my breast pump, I have to install an app on my phone AND create an online user account πŸ’€

… like why the hell do they need that data?

in reply to MClare

most fitness trackers - and I’m not even taking about β€œfree” apps but devices you pay for - also won’t give you the data; they require accounts for who knows what nefarious purposes. Needless to say, I won’t buy one.

***

Account - forget about it, unless I can use a fake email, the data is not particularly private, and I do not pay anything.

Phone number to create an account - go **** yourself, provincial spy from the 19th century.

@nerdbear
I bought a simple lock to install on a cabinet door. When it arrived I reviewed the instructions before installing it in the cabinet and discovered I had to activate the lock via a website that required an account set up with my email address before it would ever lock. The description on the website had not included this requirement. I got a full refund for the lock and found another lock that I could use with no stupid connection to the cloud.

@elronxenu @altonbrown As much as Alton Brown kvetches about unitaskers in the kitchen, I think he'd give a breast pump a pass. And maybe even a burr grinder for coffee.

@elronxenu track the date, the rate and duration of every pump, along with the quantity collected, to extrapolate the expected end of nursing, so that the mother can be presented with the appropriate* advertisements.

*Could be Gerber’s baby food coupons, or 😬 healthcare for mother or baby, based on timing and rate-of-change of milk flow.

Yikes. This is creepy AF. Do not get a pump with internet access or phone app usage.

EVER.
