Without thinking, I dashed to the rescue. Grabbing it by the scruff, I fished the poor thing out. The cat, little more than kitten size, hissed and swiped a claw at my hand. Surprised more than hurt, I dropped the cat on the ground. It scarpered under the fire escape. “And you’re real welcome, kitty.” I’d come to expect that not everyone danced happy dances when they got helped. A half-eaten meal had lured kitty to its fate. To stop it trying again, I fished out the Styrofoam tray and set it on the ground near the fire escape.
