If you just bought a Steam Controller and you see this when you try to use it, you're on Gnome and using Wayland and there's a bad interaction going on. It seems to be fixable but hasn't been fixed yet by Steam.

In the meantime, [this solution](reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comm…) worked for me. I installed [this package](aur.archlinux.org/packages/lib…) from AUR and prefixed launching Steam

`$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libextest.so /usr/bin/steam`

My Steam shortcut *has* disappeared though.

Just in case someone wants a minimal workaround – after it appears once you can just leave it in the background, perhaps on a different workspace and it shouldn’t bother you anymore. Since it shows up quite consistently and fast I tend to do that rather than installing anything.
