“Hungary requests revoking parliamentary immunity for [European MEP] Ilaria Salis … who spent 15 months in preventive imprisonment in Budapest on charges of assault against … neo-Nazi militants”

(Yes, you read all of that right.)

Here’s an idea: how about we lift Hungary’s EU membership instead and tell Orban in no uncertain terms that he can go fuck himself?

Given our new fondness for outright fascism, I'm not sure where Orban sits on the popularity scale these days.

We're not particularly conscientious about "not supporting Russia" ourselves though, are we - the laxity with which we enforce our so-called sanctions is testament to that.

@fkamiah17 No, we (as in the West, I’m assuming) don’t have a moral leg to stand on on anything and haven’t had one for a very long time, if ever. We do have better PR, though, so that’s something I guess.
in reply to Aral Balkan

No, we never did - we were just drunk on the idea that we "saved the world" in 1945.

I think the PR would more accurately be described as a miasma of self-importance and perceived invulnerability, which is no longer working the way the ruling classes want it to.

in reply to Aral Balkan

well, that would terminate all MEPS’s mandates from Hungary, so not exactly sure that’s the short term effect to aim for ^^

“‘It is no coincidence that the request was transmitted to the Parliament on October 10, the day after my speech in the Plenary on the Hungarian presidency, when I harshly criticized Orbán’s actions,’ Salis said in a press release, adding sarcastically, ‘Evidently, tyrants have a hard time digesting criticism.’”

“‘As I have already said several times, I hope that Parliament will choose to defend the rule of law and human rights without giving in to the arrogance of an “illiberal democracy” in an autocratic drift which, also through the mouths of its own leaders, has already declared guilty me on several occasions before sentencing,’ Salis continued in the note, stressing that “the minimum conditions for a fair trial to take place in Hungary do not exist.’”

they should also leave NATO, if they want to be a part of organizations like the EU or NATO, they should either be NOT fascist and Russia supporting, or they should go join Russia's versions of those (CIS and CSTO)

Look, unless the EU has mechanisms by which it can, at the very least, freeze membership of countries that come to embrace fascism, I don’t see how it doesn’t devolve into a fascist institution itself given enough time. You need to nip this shit in the bud. You can’t allow it to fester. You can’t invite it in. Freeze Hungary’s membership now. Let the people know, fascism isn’t welcome. If Hungary elects a non-fascist next time around, then, great, welcome back. Now don’t do it again or else…
