“When I was in justice, my ultimate vision for that part of the criminal justice system was to achieve, by means of AI and technology, what Jeremy Bentham tried to do with his Panopticon. That is that the eyes of the state can be on you at all times.”

– Shabana Mahmood, Home Secretary of the UK

Burying the lede in the second-to-last paragraph... One AI search system, currently being tested by two forces, is being fast-tracked because it is able to find suspects in hours of CCTV, mobile phone or doorbell cam footage 60 per cent faster than any previous technology.

Aral Balkan reshared this.

@m I used to think people complaining about centrism were unreasonable, but its so obvious now how people claiming to be in the political centre are totally willing to set up all the infrastructure needed by fascism, rather than actually do anything about the rise of fascism.

@krnlg@mastodon.social @m @aral Don't forget! They've always got time to condescend to leftists who sound the alarm, ascribe "complexity" to an issue they don't want to accept they've facilitated, remove complexity from an issue they feel is "media friendly" to be strident about, wholly ignore reams of reporting and disparage independent journalists who produce facts that they don't like ...

@m Oh, I know. I’ve personally met people whose sole purpose of employment was to add noise to the signal in political spheres to effect inaction.

"A government source said: 'This doesn’t mean watching people who are non-criminals – but she feels like....." - I think that's exactly what it means, how else will it work?
