US politics, men pressuring women to vote right-wing
If anyone, liberal or otherwise, doubts it happens, we can have a chat about it. I grew up with a Democratic mom and a Republican father. I know she voted her way a lot of the time, but the pressure he put on her was unreal. Yes, he's an asshole.
It's one of many reasons I support robust in person voting with at least a week long voting period, as well as mail in balloting and not just one or the other. People need to be able to cast their ballots secretly and for that they need to be able to get away from abusive partners (and control and the taking away of choice is abuse) and vote.
@Infoseepage Why *DO* we only have one day to vote in the standard capacity anyway?
I know other things like mail in usually give people a lot more time, but the most basic, baseline thing (the one Republicans can't get thrown out generally speaking) is limited to half of one day. Not even a full day in most places.
@nazokiyoubinbou Republicans have historically liked it because a single day of voting on a non holiday tends to restrict voting to demographics who have historically supported them, rich people who can afford time off work or drive directly to polling places, retirees, etc.
It's a way of choosing your electorate and it is evil and undemocratic.
@nazokiyoubinbou You also see stuff where the number of polling stations is restricted to say x places per district making for long lines in say inner city neighborhoods and no lines in suburbia.
@nazokiyoubinbou Voting day should be the most hallowed of national holidays and employers should be legally compelled to give time off without penalty. We should have extended voting periods and extended hours and imo polling places should be arranged so that nobody has to travel more than say five minutes by car to reach one and shouldn't have to wait more than five or ten minutes to enter a voting booth. We'll see a lot of images today of long lines where people wait hours to vote.
@green_rage @Infoseepage @nazokiyoubinbou happens in a Thursday in the UK, which means when we had a vote in the EU, we'd have to wait at least 3 days for the result so Germany and others weren't influenced.

But this.
THIS.
Is the first thing we need to fix.

They would take it away from women at the first real opportunity.
