I want to go back to a time when most people listened to new music. I was listening to my local Top 40 radio station, and it’s just stunning how most of the music on that station was made 20 years ago.
@atomicpoet because everyone’s sampling and reusing the things we were doing 20 years ago. In some cases, 40 years ago. Which is why everything sounds the same.
I’m fine with sampling insofar that it makes old music new. That’s what A Tribe Called Quest was all about. Obviously, that was old jazz music but assembled in such a way that it was something nobody heard before.
But I also hear what you’re saying about the need for some fresh instrumentation. Basically, our generation needs a Prince to come along and make something completely daring and new. J Dilla was going to be that guy, but he’s gone too soon.
