RE: hear-me.social/@Lacze/11593625…

The "brilliant" minds behind the new social network wsocial.eu forgot to grab related domain names, so I applaud the efforts of the creator of w-social.eu... encouraging people to be social and simply join the fediverse.

Fun fact: yesterday I almost registered wsocial.lol (1 Euro for the first year) and wsocial.wtf.

I guess if I see an article in mainstream media about wsocial.eu I may do it (if the domains are still available).

Journos, you should cover the fediverse!

I was this close to registering a domain name & creating a splash page to expose why wsocial.eu is such a terrible idea.

Why did I stop?

I have a big hunch that their initiative is going to FLOP. Big time.

A fork of Bluesky that requires government ID to post? Bahahahahaha.

Sure you can have rich and powerful friends helping you launch at Davos but getting people excited about a new social network isn't easy.

I will use my limited time in propping up the fediverse instead ✊

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I love how they leave the circle in Europe empty as if the Fediverse/Mastodon does not exist. Well, let em fail.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

It's a Bluesky fork? My bet was on them pulling a Truth Social with Mastodon code.

Whatever it is, it's just an opportunistic attempt to try to capitalize on people leaving an American service.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

This obsession with IDs should stop. We need more liberty and freedom.

The EU could have chosen to transfer their public communication to Mastodon and people would probably follow.

We don't need another algo driven propaganda and data harvesting machine.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

it does speak to the fact the Fediverse isn't gaining the traction it should. I think a centralised, non-profit social media could do very well in Europe.
in reply to caffetino

@caffetino the Fediverse doesn't need to constantly gain traction. It just needs to continue to exist, maturing and becoming better over time. Linux has taken over thirty years to become flavour of the month. As the movie said, build it and they will come.
in reply to skribe 🇺🇦

@skribe @caffetino When I hear “it’s gaining traction” I tend to think about lnfluencers, paid marketing and US startups. I much prefer things that grow organically. That brings to me ideas of community and word-of-mouth, of people telling others about something because they value that something. The Fediverse is growing organically, and in my opinion, it’s a much healthier way to grow.
in reply to Dmian 🇪🇺

@dmian @caffetino true evangelism comes from the heart.

Seriously, we could do a lot worse than @_elena (a beautiful, young mother - sorry to be so brutal 🤣 ).

Back in the early days of Linux, all we had neck beards and smelly neck beards. Perhaps that's why it's taken 30+years 🤣 .

in reply to skribe 🇺🇦

@skribe @dmian @caffetino 😂

Not so young here but the advantage of that is… I used every social media platform under the sun - centralized stuff - for 14+ years and I can confidently say I would have NEVER spent a month making a video in praise of any of them.

On the other hand, my love for the Fediverse is so strong that it was a real pleasure spending 8 hours a day every day making motion graphics for that video. Can’t buy my love 🤗💖

in reply to Dmian 🇪🇺

I agree that the Fediverse is growing organically, and that this is a good thing. I enjoy being here and the community feel (and the fact I know I'm not being manipulated by an algorithm).

I think there should be something else too though. Most friends and colleagues haven't heard of the fediverse (until I mention it) and then tell me it's 'too complex to join' before then joining Bluesky. These are folks in tech and science, so if anyone should be interested in this, it's them.

If they think it's too longwinded for them, then I think a centrally managed alternative is necessary, as an alternative to BSky and X. Ideally, IMHO, this should be something compatible with the Fediverse.

in reply to caffetino

@caffetino @dmian @skribe yep, the idea that social networking needs to be able to achieve hyper growth is based on the premise that it will subsequently turn a profit. But do we actually want our socialising to be profitable to someone? I would say not.

Tech bros are trying to crowbar themselves in to the middle of your hangouts in order to make a quid. I say fuck that.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

it’s also a little troubling they left off Mastodon from Europe as to indicate there is nothing currently in Europe. Liars
in reply to Jimmothy Baggins

@64bithero they’re basically a fork of Bluesky and it’s a little jarring that they didn’t reach out to the EuroSky people… like was this lazy, lack of research or intentional? 🤡
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

do we know that it is a bluesky fork? I was trying to figure out if they were gonna use an established base or just build a proprietary platform
in reply to tante

@tante I’m not sure it’s even a fork yet, but here is a screenshot from the login as well as one of the accounts in the native blue sky feed
in reply to DoktorZjivago

@doktorzjivago @tante that's not even really a wsocial account despite the handle showing as such in the screenshot, it seems like the app is just replacing ".bsky.social" with "wsocial.eu" for Bsky accounts.
in reply to DoktorZjivago

@doktorzjivago @ikuturso that's not hard, bluesky/AT proto use domains as username. So if you set up you wsocial domain in a way to deliver the right DNS records that's basically a built-in feature. You can do that without any changes to the code
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

@doktorzjivago P.S.: may I use this if I ever register a domain name to troll them? I’d put it at the very top of the page, LOL

@tante @ikuturso

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Haha. Eurobros got owned!

They thought if they have the connections to Davos, they can just cash in on some half-assed work, which sells your data.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I wonder what datacenters they are going to run that in? AWS? Lol
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

One thing the fediverse has going for it is if you really wanted to create a Real Name space, you can do it in a much more sane way - by adding people you meet in the physical world and federating with like-minded instances.

Probably this would be most useful if you are running a school or something and want to provide a social media situation for the students?

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Wait, there's *another* Euro/Blue/Sky?

Nothing to do with the one from the Modal Foundation (NL)?
eurosky.social/about

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I believe that several thousand Europeans will participate in this nonsense, either out of curiosity or, mainly, out of stupidity.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I saw your post in the morning, so ... yeah, during lunch I've started a single page in czech language on wsocial.cz which explains folks a few things about Fediverse and directs them to other resources 🥰
in reply to Kayla Eilhart (en)

@kayla you're the BEST Kayla!!!!!! Bravissima! I hope I'll get to thank you in person at FOSDEM :)
in reply to Kayla Eilhart (en)

@Lacze

I think W social is a great idea ! If all the politicians are on there, we can mute or block them all at once 😄

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Ha! I just registered wsocial.ca (My main domains are wheeli.social and wheeli.ca so it's a nice short form).

Well. I shouldn't browse the Fediverse at night. I might buy a domain I don't need!

in reply to Papa Wheeli

@papa EPIC!!! And you just inspired me to register a couple of domains later this morning 😂 (gotta get my little one to nursery school first)
