HOLY CRAP!

The USHL is applying to join the CHL.

If you’re not a hockey fan, here’s the shorthand. The USA’s lone major junior league is now trying to join Canada’s major junior system. If it goes through, the USHL becomes the fourth league eligible to compete for the prestigious Memorial Cup.

Hence the rebrand: the National Junior Hockey League (NJHL).

And to be clear, some U.S. teams are in the CHL right now, just not through the U.S. league. They were slotted into the Canadian leagues instead.

As a Canadian, I favour less coupling with the USA, not more. This is not great.

@elasticsoul Currently, nine American teams play in the CHL. Two of them — the Portland Winterhawks and the Spokane Chiefs — have each won the Memorial Cup twice. The USHL has 16 teams, which means 36% of all American major junior teams are already in the CHL.

And for scale, there are 52 Canadian major junior teams.
