It's not a Markovian process. Past events, i.e. history, proven ability in fixing similar problems, willingness to abandon bad policies, etc, show exactly how the future will be. Miracles didn't happen 20 years ago when we knew all this was coming, and won't happen now either. Looking at how elites have reacted so far, we are indeed screwed for good.

Giving up? Of course not. We must make sure those same elites responsible get screwed before it's too late. Then there's hope.

Yes, they must definitely pay for their crimes. But no, we can't predict the future.. And also the past has shown us some successes - like protecting some species, some areas of the planet, fixing the ozone layer..

Most "elites" are not reacting because they are the ones who cause the problem, but that doesn't really matter - the elites are nothing without the support of the population. So, the population, we, need to wake up, and earlier rather than later!

The report assigns certainty to the trends and lays out a grim future. Optimism is not an ally when the alarm sounds so loud and immediate action is required.

Many times throughout history elites did not enjoy the support of the people but still prevailed using force. Today the US is sinking to fascism, with its elites proactively taking away people's freedoms in anticipation of those upcoming crises. What WE need to do is know who we are up against and organize for what's coming.
