That’s not snow. One of northern India’s sacred rivers, the Yamuna, was blighted by toxic foam after companies dumped pollutants into the water system. The river runs through New Delhi, which experienced record-breaking smog this month as pollution levels soared in several South Asian cities.

Several activities contribute to the problem, including construction, crop burning and pollution from vehicles and industry. Last week, levels of the fine particulate matter known as PM2.5, which is small enough to be inhaled and enter lung tissue and the bloodstream, were more than 77 times higher than the safe levels set by the World Health Organization.
