Buried in New York State's proposed budget is an ill-conceived measure to stifle 3D printing with surveillance and censorware. We need to act now to defend creators and demand legislators to drop these provisions. eff.org/deeplinks/2026/04/stop… #newyork #3dprinting

Is this being pushed by AI companies trying to make sure there's something out there that "requires" AI to even pretend to accomplish?

AI is going to get it wrong, but there's really no other way that anyone is even going to come up with anything at all that even tries to address these stupid laws, like WA already passed.

Yes. It's a bad thing and must be stopped. But also… even if that were ever enacted, how would it be enforced?

Whenever shit like this comes up, the important question to always ask is; What is the end goal? What other ridiculous things can be easily tacked onto this once it's in place?

These sorts of legislation are always pushed under the guise of things like public safety, child protection, human rights, etc. Using this sort of language to identify their initial plan makes it very dificult for anyone to oppose them without being flagged as an asshole.

Take for example the recent "age verification" stuff that's been proposed and passed recently done for the ""protection of children"" from porn, gambling, or anything deemed inappropriate. Or... could it be read that this is an easy way for someone to identify/isolate all the kinky kids?

Folks in positions to shut this sort of ridiculousness down before it's ever known to the public have get to stop being scared to oppose these bullies, do what they're there to do and stand up for the people they represent.

This will completely kills STEM forever! Not to mention it violates HIPPA if ever printing for medical implants, or any kind of medical devices for any purpose. Remember those folks who 3D printed masks during covid?! That will never be possible ever again with laws like this!!
