after reading about this I just opened a Eurosky "MU" account instead. Will stay on Mastodon but may migrate my BlueSky account to MU: mu.social/profile/daveeveritt.…

Update: I opened a MU account *before* migrating my BlueSky to EuroSky and now get this when trying to migrate… have opened a support request.

Is EU trying to become a more "polite" version of the orange thing in the White House ?
Looks like we are willing to go in that direction. I mean...not me, but Governments....
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

This almost looks like a scam where you have to enter a PIN. Do you have to enter it in the app?
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

I don't like the way it needs my ID. This should never be required in my opinion.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Like... No, freaking way. 🀨️
I hope users have even quater of a brain and just do not use it.

90's was told that, not to put anything about real you in internet, this has become full 180Β° over the years.

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Well I registered for it, but on second thought, maybe not... "We don't need US tech" / "Please use US tech" / "You MUST use US tech"

I'm a senior, very experienced IT devops: I was informed the other day that public institutions are now paying for workshops held by Microsoft representatives on "how to implement souvereign IT - with Windows".

Eh... πŸ™„ ?

If I'd be one of the admins there, I'd stand up and call #bullshit

@ anyone reading this: we are paying for this in high numbers daily. That money is missing where actually needed.

W Social: "You need to verify your identity. Please download our #WIdentity app from Apple's App Store or Google's Play Store"

Go to googles or apples tracker store and download the app.

Does the W stand for Wankers?

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

So to access this "open" space we need to download an application from the stores from the selfsame companies you criticised for having a gatekeeper roles? AND these are the companies we want to become more independent off. Hypocritical the last degree. Hard to believe that this actually about freedom and sovereignty, and not about building yet another surveillance and censorship apparatus. Just "Under EU controll".
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

I don't even understand how this thing works. They claim to have no access to the user's identity data and that it stays local on the device. So why do they need you to scan your passport while there are countless ways to authenticate anonymously?
In a press report they say that the goal is to confirm you're human without revealing who you are, yet in the very next sentence they say that they encourage a culture where users engage under their real names, WTF?

Interesting move toward digital sovereignty. It will be interesting to see how identity verification shapes user trust and platform adoption in Europe πŸ‘€

@_elena @EUCommission

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

If they are genuinely seeking digital sovereignty, they should include #fdroid as a software store from which the app can be downloaded.

I love the idea of the EU, but sometimes they don't know their arse from their elbow. Proper facepalm moment.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

hoffentlich fΓ€llt die @EUCommission damit so richtig auf die fresse. Sorry. Ich will niemandem was BΓΆses- aber halt am liebsten wenn mein gegenΓΌber das auch so sieht.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Yeah - this was never going to work.

They could have just set up an EU Commission Mastodon instance - much simpler and cheaper!

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Also apart from that - as Wsocial already plans to monetarize itself starting '28, which means either free (for data) or advertising (with data) - or both, this is not an independent platform AT ALL. The current phase is for getting people socialized there, who then will be too accustomed to it to leave.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Using US surveillance tech in order to be able to say they have an alternative to US surveillance tech...

You couldn't make it up.

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

"fully decentralized, have your passport or ID ready" is fucking gold 🀣🀣🀣🀣
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

If government’s around the world continue blocking access to what we use now behind ID verification, will Mastodon and other Fediverse services be considered illegal or unsafe?

We see it now with GrapheneOS and VPN’s and other devices without Apple and Google store services.

It makes me wonder what is in store for the open source platform and community.

in reply to JoΓ£o

@joao72 this is precisely my fear and why I speak up against it. A very dangerous slippery slope and an existential threat to the Fediverse and the open web
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Trip. I wanted to look it up before making my claims but I can't find anything on them. There's a widentity.eu that has a privacy notice but, at least for me, it's a blank screen.

I'd bet your id information doesn't stay on your device but ends up on a blockchain of some sort. Maybe you have the option of not pushing, to enable the claim, but then nothing works because everything depends on the info being on the chain.

It's possible to do I think, but I'd be surprised.

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Wo ist der Vorteil sich nicht gegenΓΌber der amerikanischen sondern der europΓ€ischen Kontrollwut und Deprivatisierungstendenzen gegenΓΌber nackig zu machen?
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

haha, thats entertaining to watch. want an invite to freiburg.social? show me your selfpainted passport. only valid in rainbow colors and if you have kids, its a must they have created it for you ;)))

@EUCommission

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

So, if you don't have an Android(like) OS on your phone/tablet/TV or iOS on your phone/iPad OS on your tablet you cannot get a Wsocial account?

But you should be able to use a Eurosky account interact with to Wsocial users, right? As both use the AT Protocol which includes federation functionality.

And Eurosky only requires an email address to register an account.

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

lol, fighting against πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ age verification or identity verification, but also asking passport & id verification for Europe apps at the name of decentralization. πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ˜…πŸ˜…
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

> "No further comment necessary."

The irony stings: 'Digital Sovereignty' tied to foreign app stores, and 'security' meaning surveillance.
πŸ‘‰ These contradictions do demand deeper explanation.

Today #WSocial CEO Anna Zeiter will be participating at a panel discussion at the prestigious Cannes Lions: "A Sense of Impending Doomscrolling: Rebooting AI and Social Media."

The 30 min panel will be live-streamed at 4pm CET

I'm interested in the AI bit because she previously gave some controversial statements but her video was deleted from YouTube.

If any of you have time to watch & report back, I would be SO GRATEFUL (family thing; I can't watch sadly)

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

I will see if I can't record it and then send a link, either to the entire cast, or the AI part.

@sintrenton grazieeeeeee πŸ™ and no pressure if you can’t, very kind of you to offer. Love the spirit of the fediverse ❀️

Prego, and unless my OBS Studio decides to not cooperate, I should have time.
Same here, that's why I love it here. πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

So terribly sorry, I didn't manage to sign up, it seems to have decided I was not trustworthy, a lot of fields required data I couldn't supply. Terribly sorry, I tried.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

I tried to access it as well, but in order to view the 30 min panel discussion, a 99 euro streaming pass to the whole conference was required. If somebody has one, the site says a replay is available for the next 14 days.
