@aral @Geri @AsarSameer @raphaellakay @kathimmel @FediWouter @joynewacc On GoFundMe, the commission is around 21% just to withdraw from the platform.
After that, the person who withdraws the funds (who is usually in a foreign country) sends the money to me through PayPal, which takes around 9% in fees.
Then, when I withdraw the money from the bank, there is another fee of about 20%

And the total fees deducted from all of this come to around 42%

@aseelfromgz @Geri @AsarSameer @raphaellakay @kathimmel @FediWouter @joynewacc Aseel, wait a minute, did the person who is withdrawing your funds from GoFundMe tell you that they are charged 21% by GoFundMe. Because that is not correct. GoFundMe charges just 2.9% + $0.30 for each donation. There is no additional commission to withdraw funds.

@aral @Geri @AsarSameer @raphaellakay @kathimmel @FediWouter @joynewacc He didn’t say that, but last week we requested money from GoFundMe.
We wanted 500, and when he transferred it to us, it was only 395.
And he even sent us a screenshot showing that

@aseelfromgz @Geri @AsarSameer @raphaellakay @kathimmel @FediWouter @joynewacc Ah, no, what that’s showing is that they sent you Β£395.29 (GBP – British Pounds) which was converted into $500 (USD – US dollars).

@aseelfromgz @Geri @AsarSameer @raphaellakay @kathimmel @FediWouter @joynewacc So he did send you $500 but it was converted to US dollars from Β£395.29. So you should be getting $500 as you asked.

The real big commission is what you will be paying when you try and withdraw the $500 in Gaza. That’s the amount (percentage) I’m interested in finding out :)

I realized that only after I looked at the picture again, and I felt really silly. When he sent the photo, my sister told me something and I just followed what she said without looking carefully at it myself. That was really careless of me

I asked her, and it turns out there’s a 15% fee from her bank.
So it’s 2.9% from GoFundMe, then 15% from her bank, then 9% from PayPal when she sends the money to us, and after that, when we withdraw it here, there’s about a 20% fee (it’s not a fixed rate β€” it changes from day to day, but lately it’s been around 20%)

How good are you at driving a submarine and firing a Kalashnikov? :) (Because unless we can break through Israel’s blockade, there really isn’t a way of avoiding the commissions that are charged in Gaza. The closest thing is cryptocurrency and that has its own slew of issues and would only bypass it if it was accepted in Gaza. I don’t know if any are for things like food, etc.)

@aseelfromgz @aral @AsarSameer @raphaellakay @kathimmel @FediWouter @joynewacc I still maintain guys that must be a way for me to get my money into Aseel's hands at zero loss to banks and other 'middle men'

@Geri @aseelfromgz @AsarSameer @raphaellakay @kathimmel @FediWouter @joynewacc You can. When she goes to withdraw it, she will be charged a large amount of commission by her bank.

(Also: depending on your bank, paying directly into Palestinians accounts may not be possible – eg., mine doesn’t allow it – and, if you’re not careful and make a payment into the account of a sanctioned account that could also get you sanctioned, so please be careful with that.)

Basically, if there was an easy way to do it, we’d all be using it. There just isn’t at the moment and likely won’t be until some semblance of normalcy can be implemented.

How easy is it for people in Palestine to open online accounts with companies like Wise or Revolut?
From there one could transfer funds into a local bank?
