That's for a ZX Spectrum? I could have sworn that variable names could only be single letters?

String variables could be named from a$ to z$ and number variables were a to z

Am I remembering wrong, or is this listing for one of the later spectrums, like the 128k or something?

They can be some letters (i.e. LET level=1), not matter which model
