🚨 New post alert πŸ“

A deep dive into #WSocial with some fascinating findings: candid statements about their motives, a Greta Thunberg connection, potential AI plans (!!!)

Why write about it again? I still had so many questions after publishing my first article.

I spent 3 weeks watching every interview I could find and connecting the dots.

I hope you'll enjoy this piece:

W Social is just another disease that don't need a cure. It will die by itself. πŸ€žβ€‹
in reply to Vinterkarusell ⁂

@vinterkarusell they are extremely well connected (in the worlds of business and politics in Europe) and have deep pockets, so it could go on for a while...
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

they sure are. But, what is a social media network without users like you and me? If they build something for the "elite" - they can, but who is it for? Not me. The whole vibe with that project is just off. Way off. Anyway, you have done a fantastic job writing about it.
in reply to Vinterkarusell ⁂

@vinterkarusell thank you - I spent 3 weeks digging up info about it... vibes are TOTALLY off for sure, thus my fascination

the fact they can connect to the ATproto world may give them more runway than random social media projects based on proprietary software.

and they have strong connections to the Eurostack people (which I didn't have time to discuss in this piece)... so they may be around for a while

in reply to Bill

@w_b hahaha no, I’m not as courageous as Molly White. I’m done with investigative pieces for a while.

These are really powerful, well connected people; becoming persona non grata to a long long list of power players in Europe is not really my thing.

Moving on to boosting Fedi projects now! πŸš€

@vinterkarusell

@w_b @vinterkarusell would like to add this is a great piece. It reminds me a lot of people like Rutger Bregman and his "School For Moral Ambition". He also made a bit of a name for himself at Davos.

People should be asking - why (and how?) are these people being pushed onto such a platform?

Most of these people see things like climate change as nice opportunities to earn $$$ - either directly or through additional soft power.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

@vinterkarusell

No one needs enemies, especially those in power.

Thank you for your efforts and analysis.

Yep, that's how I think of them too. πŸ˜€

great article πŸ’œ, thanks for doing some real journalism instead of regurgitating press releases like the mainstream media do

My top 3 "favorite" (aka juicy) discoveries about #WSocial, which I discuss on my blog:

πŸ”— : blog.elenarossini.com/the-unto…

1) The co-founders picked #ATproto but only started using the network WEEKS after their Davos launch

2) The CEO said "we also want to keep European data in Europe to maybe train European AI models with our data because we also have amazing AI companies in Europe" 🀯

3) W Social user "homersimpson"

If you enjoy the article please boost it πŸ™

in reply to Neil Brown

@neil and I could have easily written another 4000 words about it. I made so many interesting discoveries! I can safely claim to be an expert in W Social now πŸ˜…
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

"maybe train European AI models with our data"

Feels like they're giving away the plan like they think we're James Bond tied to a table that we can't possibly escape...

in reply to I AM BANKSY β˜• / πŸ—‘β€πŸ”₯

@xinit their Davos launch video was so triggering because everyone was in red MAGA-like baseball hats and you had to stop the video to see the message was "make science great again"
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Great research and write-up. Thank you!

I miss when we had tech publications that would run this sort of article…

in reply to Tyrone Slothrop

@slothrop thank you! I wholeheartedly agree!

it would be so great if someone brought back Valleywag (gone too soon) 😭

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Damn. When an idea seems good in advance but shows it's true colours as a baddie later.

(cf Google, Mozilla, etc)

in reply to AlisonW

@alisonw indeed. although in this particular case I got weird vibes from the start... their original website had red flags all over πŸ˜…
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

1 and 2 are pretty contradictory, since ATproto makes all data public. You can't keep the network's data in Europe if any spider can crawl it from any locatiom.
in reply to Leonieke

@leonieke thank you Leonieke! now that I'm out of that rabbit hole I can experiment again with my Heltec πŸ˜… looking forward to trying communicating with you
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Thanks. Do you know also anything about eurosky.tech/?
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Excellent piece of investigative journalism again Elena!
What's also a red flag in my book is this quote from Zeiter:
"And by this we want to create a platform where things like climate, environment can be discussed in a non-cancel culture."
A non-cancel culture is exactly the argument Elon used. Well, we all know how that turned out. πŸ™„
in reply to Nina Pescatore

@PensioNien thank you Nina! I got so many Elon vibes from them... promises to save the world (remember when Musk said he'd end world hunger?) but then going for a money and power grab
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

My impression is that their pitch is to build an effectively centralized network that can be regulated easily according to EU politicians' wishes (strong ID requirements, age restrictions, etc.). They will probably try to build something like a 21st-century royal court with politicians surrounded by journalists and celebrities, but I'm not sure you can make a tens of billions doing that.
in reply to Hendrik Weimer

@hweimer absolutely! and I'm a bit sorry I didn't have time to explore the EuroStack connection in my piece.

I find W's initiative is a naked money and power grab

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Nice work. Absolutely something I would boost across other networks if I still had accounts on them!

(also, BeReal is still around?!)

in reply to bbbhltz

@bbbhltz haha thank you!

and yes, BeReal is still around, but I don't know how active it is...

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Wow superbe recherche !

in reply to Audric

@audricd oui, ils sont très très louches. à eviter à mon avis
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

here's another deep dive by @MichaelMrak@mastodon.mrak.at @michaelmrak@privacyofficers.social (dunno which of his many accounts to mention) including Eurosky, not sure if you already knew it: mrak.at/w-social-bluesky-und-e…
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

lol, thank you, being based on atproto is enough information for me to not touch it with a 10ft pole...
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

thanks for the depth, and yes:
what a surprising surprise!: as shady today as it was from the beginning..
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

i spend some time in a videocall with one of their people and you confirm quite a lot of my suspicions. Great research!
in reply to Hayo

@kineticdiplomacy thanks Hayo and wow! I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during that call
@Hayo
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I think the motives are easy.

1. They want to make money.
2. Politicians want to appear to be doing something about social media along various axes (age gates, identity, sovereignty)
3. "We have a product ready to go, give us funding / move your social presence to us / write laws that match our behaviour and cause problems for our competitors" is a tried and tested way to get market dominance.

in reply to Nik

@nikclayton 🎯🎯🎯 spot on Nik! I didn't editorialize much because I didn't want to make assumptions, just report hard facts. But I agree with you
@Nik
in reply to Nik

IMHO the biggest risk to the Fediverse is not technical or project/social, it's regulatory capture by other services.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Thanks for writing this. It is really important to know where this comes from, who they are, and what it is.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Very well done!

I'm still amazed that so many people think all they have to do is "talk a good game" once they make all the connections, all the while thinking that they're so stealthy and sneaky enough to bypass any suspicions, and then, "just a little bit more, and we'll fool everybody".

I swear they just can't help themselves and still end up with a massive trail of breadcrumbs for someone to find, and in this case, that someone was you.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Of course, Jesuit bullspit inbound.

Y'all in Europe need to start repenting of your Catholicism. This is why Europe is getting destroyed. Us Americans are getting destroyed by divine judgment as well.
