Yes, I knew about Wsocial being built on ATProto and Wedium isn’t. I just received an invitation from Wedium (Beta testing).
Apparently you have to ID-verify yourself (with lots of personal information) to be able to post a media (pic or video) and to interact. The Ws and ID-verification requirements make me wonder if they’re somehow related 🤔
Anyways, I just claimed my username and left it at that 😉
Currently they have roughly 500 test users (200 actively posting content) and want to allow another 5k test users soon. Allegedly there's more than 15k on the waiting list.
In comparison, W Social aims to reach at least 100k by the end of the year and 1 million next year. Currently there's about just 200 accounts on W.
Not sure if Bluesky's network effect is of any help here. Why move your account to W (instead of Eurosky) and undergo ID verification, when you're already on Bluesky?
Why indeed? I have yet to come across someone who’s on Eurosky PDS who actually wants to switch to WS. The only people who are enthusiastic are WS’s team members and their “influencers” (some are already labeled Spam by Bsky moderators) 🫣
People on Bsky/Eurosky aren’t enthusiastic not only due to the ID verification itself but also the ambiguity of the relationship between WS and W Identity. A WS influencer said that they’re (WS and WI) separate apps. I disagreed because they look separate but both are related and Zeiter confirmed it as “we have our OWN app for that” (screenshot). He kept on and on, until he found out that both apps come from WS (screenshot) 🙂
W Social AB is located at the same address as We Don't Have Time (a foundation that has 25% ownership of it). There's also a W Social & Friends run by the CEO of We Don't Have Time with the purpose of "owning shares in W Social AB and related activities" allabolag.se/foretag/w-social-…
I haven't been able to find any records of W Identity as a company but the data is processed by Neuro of Trust Anchor Group trustanchorgroup.com
to whom it may concern, #Wedium isn't built on AT Proto – YET, according to Wedium.
" That issue has already been fixed, @ hannes. We’re not using Bluesky yet because it’s a U.S. company and is subject to the U.S. CLOUD Act, which requires it to hand over all data at Trump’s request. We definitely don’t want that. "
ATproto is an open protocol so I'm not sure how under the US Cloud act the US gov could demand W turn over their user data. Not possible. Plus everything is public on ATproto.
Honestly the Wedium people have a tendency to give idiotic arguments - like saying they wouldn't be on the Fediverse because Truth Social is running on Mastodon code. Yeah, TS used the code and never federated. That's the principle of open source software.
I do agree, that's just another stupid excuse. But by writing "not yet", they don't exclude using AT Proto in the future. It would make sense, so that they could federate with their "friends" from the other W. I think right now they're busy vibe coding the very basics and to my understanding there's only Mr. Hacker [sic!] from Austria doing it, whereas the other W is basically just implementing another Bluesky (and ID verification) und has a tech team in Ukraine doing it.

in reply to hannes99 • • •Well, maybe they have different desks but the names (W and W) alone should have already rang a bell to a non-influencer 😬
And that’s why I was wondering the other day about the relationship between WS (+WI) and Wedium as well. Someone loves the “W” a bit too much 😉

(Yet do their friends from #WSocial? 🤔🤭)
They didn't deny using Vibe Coding, btw.
