Day 2 of #MeshCore experiments, let's go! πŸš€

First I'll try to see if I can send any messages with just my companion unit and if that fails, I will set up my second unit as a repeater on my parents' balcony...

Thanks to everyone who sent in pics of their cute pets yesterday to cheer me up (after hours of failing to send any messages). Much appreciated! πŸ’–

You will definitely have more fun when the repeater is up :) Talking from experience. You will most likely not be able to reach my node in Munich, though. Damn :)

oh, oh, my favourite cases for these are by this person printables.com/@AlleyCat !!

Update: my Heltec experiments are still a major failure despite the endless patience and expert guidance of @stereo (my mesh guru)... BUT! My family is maybe starting to take me seriously?!?

Major pivot from yesterday... looking at me like: "what are you doing weirdo?"

to today:

Them: "Is anybody else around here using it?"

Me: "Yes, let me show you on the map!"

Them: "Wow, impressive!"

Step by step πŸ˜…

#MeshCore

@stereo Just ordered my V3 :-) looks like a lot of fun, will be taking it in the motorhome to France at the end of August September!!

Update no.3: my #MeshCore Bluetooth companion is picking up my Meshcore Repeater - YAY πŸ₯³

We had to leave Paris in a hurry last month because of the brutal heatwave so I forgot the cases there. But here in Italy I have an endless supply of LEGO, so I built a custom housing for my Heltec v3 repeater, its battery and antenna. I really like it πŸ₯°

It’s tricky and frustrating when you see hundreds of repeaters and companions, in neighbouring countries too, and then your own messages barely get a repeat. I guess I should try having both a repeater and a companion, too.

that would lovely with a green or red antenna, and then some Star Wars Lego....

I still think, at some point, I need to get into the meshcore stuff....

it's not really important, but why did you think German / Swiss?
Edit: Swiss probably because Helvetia?

are you sure you're not just enjoying the LEGO with mesh as an excuse? πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‚

Ask your little one 😁 !

I suspect she was involved in the design of the first one.

wihihi, got a bit simpler setup (first iteration using a tire to fix LoRA antenna in position and second one... just a cube with some fixtures for bigger antenna).

Btw, also Heltec V3. Made into easily backpackable contraption.

that is an awesome case!

One of the best things I did was to get an antenna that's tuned well for the frequency (I think you're on 868MHz there?) The stub antennas sometimes don't do very well.

Improving your repeater antenna would give you a better range, but there's nothing better than height!

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

cool case. Maybe I will do the same when I set up a repeater in Verona ;)

I guess you have kept a child spirit 😁.

I always find lego to be an excellent alternative when you don't have a 3D printer.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Wow! I Please make a video "give me 4 minutes ... " for MeshCore ;) I use MeshCore in germany. πŸ‘

#MeshCore update no.4: I'm now receiving messages from my Fedi friend @stereo who is 380km away across the Alps πŸ—»

I'd like to think my #LEGO stand proved to be a great good luck charm.

Ralf recommended I upgrade my antennas, so hopefully I'll be able to send out messages too... stay tuned!

@stereo excellent ! Dès que j'ai du temps, je monte un réseau pour désenclaver mon village 😊

@stereo does it exist a world wide map of those (to see if it's even interesting to look about it)

but congrat either way :)

My neewbie-problem was the scope setting. I have become many news, but none had me heared. Wishing you continued success.

may have been a result of tropo effects :) sadly, not bidirectional feed. Nevertheless, fun anyway.

@stereo depending where you are, you can easily reach southeastern France and Switzerland

@stereo I look forward to each update. I started with radio as a kid. Then found a computer kit when I went to Heathkit for a new radio. It looks like a good time to see what I can do with the latest RF.

πŸ“» Adventures in #MeshCore communications - part 6 πŸ“‘

My teacher @stereo recommended I get more powerful antennas - price: 9 Euros for 2.

They are slightly longer than my hand… and miraculously I went from receiving signals in Lombardy (my region) to reaching repeaters as far away as Sardinia and Rome!!!

How? It feels like magic 🀯

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

@stereo Nice! Is that direct, or is it that you're finally able to reach some other nodes that have good connectivity?
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

@stereo yes, antenna size matters......

Fun fact, in the math describing Synthetic Aperture Radar imaging, the formula that shows how fine a resolution you can resolve, the distance to target cancels itself out. No matter how far you are from the target, the resolution is determined solely by the antenna size.

Spy satellites in ultra high orbits get pictures just as sharp as spy planes only a couple thousand feet aloft.

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

@stereo sadly in my case the most close other one is 120 KM (~74 miles) from me.

So unless i build many of them i trow outside xD

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

I cannot wait until I read about your full set-up to mimick it here in The Hague and who knows: we might be in touch! :blobcathighfive:

I might join from Berlin if I have the spare spoons (big if). This has big modern ham radio energy.

Yep. It used to work in the past but recently, after the introduction of regions and some repeaters having gone offline in Switzerland due to "reasons", this is the typical picture I get since a few months :( Sometimes it moves up to Berlin or even my home country, The Netherlands, but that is rare. I don't really mind, as I think that such mesh approaches should be local first anyway. @sturmsucht @stereo

@stereo I have a passion for network connectivity, but here in Gaza, we have been forced to resort to using worn-out wiring due to the destruction left behind by the genocide.
