The software gets bigger and heavier and more processor intensive. The software eats the hardware gains and you're running fast and still falling behind. You must now watch 8K video and therefore must buy a new phone. An 8K video is 10 times heavier and more polluting than an HD video. On your smartphone, you literally can't even see the difference. It's pointless waste. And even if you don't want to upgrade, you have to. That work scheduling app demands that you upgrade, your bank app demands that you upgrade, your government apps demand that you upgrade. Things that last have long been the enemy of Big Tech. The longer a product lasts, the less money Big Tech will make. So they design minimally viable products."

I watch my videos in 720p for that reason. I go to 1080p if the content really needs it. It is so simple of an act, there is no reason not to do it.
