The buildings are plastered/painted in an ochre colour and are indirectly illuminated by sunlight reflecting off of the windows of the building opposite. The lighting is brightest far back in the alley, with the foreground mostly in shadow. The building on the other side is just visible as a blurred sliver of a silhouette along the left edge of the frame.
