Dear Fedi friends,

I hereby present you my new favorite website: isaiprofitable.com, which tracks the spending and revenue of all the major AI companies.

Oh it is glorious - the perfect link to share with AI-pilled people in your life.

Spoiler alert: there is a NO in big red letters on the homepage. And there's a running tally of the money spent on AI since the page loaded.

@davidgerard you would love it

The really depressing thing is thinking what could have been done with 1.4 trillion dollars. That's what people in the future won't believe. "They spent it on chatbots when children were starving and the biosphere was collapsing?!?"

I love how this is presented where at first glance you read the numbers up top and get the impression that they're half way to profitability until you scroll down and realize that Nvidia is the only company making money and nobody else is even close @davidgerard

Thank you for a consequential followup to web3isgoinggreat.com

I would have wished for a little bit more cynical name though.

Also, it seems so far that there's only one profiteer in the gravedigger business: the shovel maker.

@janbeta Just imagine the numbers without nVidia in the list (and should they really be counted? They actually make products…)
in reply to Brad Thornborrow

@bradthornborrow @janbeta As noted elsewhere, this is demonstration of the principle of 'in a gold rush, the guy making money is the guy selling the picks and shovels.'

that blue number increases way too much and way too fast for my liking #fuckai

I sent this site to someone I know who preaches that β€œcapitalism will shift the market towards saving the planet’s ecosystem”

He sent me back a screenshot of the change in NVDA price over the past couple years and said β€œIt’s done pretty well for the past 3.5 years! The answer is yes, AI has been very profitable [for] anyone with exposure to those AI platform stocks in an IRA or 401(k) and many users of ChatGPT, Claude, etc, who pay little but now can’t imagine life without it”

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Selling shovels & supplies was where the money was during most gold rushes.

I'm engaged in a Mastodon chat with someone like this right now. I sent them the URL, but I don't think they opened it.

It's difficult to convince someone of something when their paycheck depend on them not understanding it.

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

so, the question now is where are going them to allocate the debt, if it is possible (may be not).

Maybe only Apple is earning money :) their Mac minis and studio are perfect devices for local ai!

@davidgerard@circumstances.run

for those of you who don't live in the real world:

It is 100% normal for a startup capital intensive business, or a startup capital intensive tech, to run at a loss for several years

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

So basically Apple is the winner here? While they did not join the AI train because of internal issues, they might have dodged a bullet here?
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

I'm confus. I thought we don't like it when big companies make a profit. The AI companies are running as nonprofits? Is that bad. I don't know how to do financial.

Duckduckgo simply does not load that page, Chrome warns me that this website is dangerous. Intetesting.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

And why is NVIDIA doing so much better than the others? Because it's the one that's earning money the others spend?
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

questo dimostra che @DataKnightmare ha ragione quando dice che nella corsa all'oro chi vince Γ¨vil venditore di pale e picconi.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Not surprised with Nvidia being the only one profitable in the list. β€œSell the pick and shovel during a gold rush” as the saying goes

Maybe it's nothing. Please prove me wrong.

They're on bad spanish, you'll need a translator or something, don't discard them because of language.

this space is too short to give you a preview. alright: #iacontent #sensitive .
Yes: AI conversation.

Like a lot of tech companies the profit comes from selling your shares in the company for a gain before it never turns a profit

Suggestion: An additional bar that accounts for externalized costs, such as fresh water spoilage, grid strain, and increased pollution from dirty power sources.

glorious, and just what I need next time this codswallop comes up at work
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Good link, tankees!

It's not uncommon for the nail-makers to rake it in during a gold rush, so Nvidia's early jackpot makes sense.

Doubt they'll be the ones with the last laugh though. If anyone remembers laughter, that is.

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

lmao I love this. Thank you for showing just how unsustainable the industry known as AI is currently

This is outstanding and I have collected the link here. manzokuan.blogspot.com/p/infor…
