Wow, UK vacation time is 42 days a year for a university lecturer. (I can't imagine anyone not in academia in the US taking that much vacation , EVEN IF their employer gave it to them... darn workaholic culture). I don't know anyone in the US who still has a pension plan, either.

I used to have 42 days in Germany, 30 days by law and then 1 additional day a month because we worked 40 h/week when 38 was agreed on with the unions. (Remember those?)

And yes folks took 3-4 weeks during the summer and then another 3 weeks the rest of the year. Going skiing, enjoying spring, whatever they felt like doing.

Yes. I miss that.
