I am immensely grateful to the Fediverse for all the encouragement I got here to embark on a #selfhosting journey.

#YunoHost has empowered my digital life in immeasurable ways.

My way of giving back - and fighting the broligarchs of Big Tech - is to create a guide that demystifies the process. I have compiled all my posts so far in a single page:

If you're curious about self-hosting but you haven't taken the leap yet, I hope my articles will be helpful to you ❤️

I am with yunohost too. Installed castopod, writefreely, mastodon, webmin and Nextcloud. It is another live with self hosting

Self Hosting is so liberating. You set your own rules.

For me, it's about posting what I like without fear of some silly sausage moaning to an Admin about me. 🤣

Obviously, I have to behave on mastodon.org.uk
(Well, a bit, at any rate.😉 )

Thank you for sharing your journey and learnings--you rock!!! 🙌

It's one I embarked on a few years ago, and was daunting, humbling, and also fun and empowering.

My biggest win: I can now access my old phone photos easily, without needing to pay Forever Rent™️ to #apple for #iCloud thanks to the brilliant software #immich

Thank you for this article. I'm not young(!), and I'm making my way, cautiously, into the world outside Google, Facebook, etc, etc. I'm discovering a new language that I'm finding confusing at my age, but I'm determined to press on and loosen the grip of the giants, with the help of people like you. Thank you! 🙏

your guide was so helpful when I was setting up my VPS. Thank you for such a great guide!

Have you actually suffered any attacks yet?

Could be you wouldn't know unless you're looking into this sort of thing. Have you looked at the logs and stuff to see what it's default defense mechanisms have stopped? I believe it has built in fail2ban and such, no?

thanks for introducing me to Yuno Host. I've set up linux servers and docker containers, but I don't want to do it again. I see other novices having good experiences with Yuno Host lemmy.world/post/37132643

I haven't finished your guide yet, but I must start keeping my services LAN-only until until I learn enough about the security side of things. That's another area that I hope becomes unified too (if it isn't already).

I got inspiration from your posts to try yunohost, but for hosting nextcloud at home. It's all up and running now 👌

The only issue with that was the lack of documentation for absolute beginners for installing on a home server.

Where did you get your domain name? Does it point to a VPS or to an "home hosted" machine?

I'm also getting ready to play with YunoHost (I'm doing the spare PC in my basement route) so appreciate your articles. Hopefully you are planning to do a "how to restore from backup" as well. I figure eventually, something will go drastically wrong.
in reply to Etienne le Marchand (Steve J)

@etnmarchand yes... but as I wrote in my backup piece my VPS does automated daily backups for me...and keeps several of them, going back in time up to 2 weeks, so it gives me peace of mind... 🥲
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Ah. Well, I will have to experiment then since I plan to run it on an old PC in my basement (at least to start). I better make sure I know how to restore before relying on it.

I use Hestia Control Panel #hestiacontrolpanel & @yunohost, both. Been using HCP for ages now, and only recently started with YNH, as I finally figured how to get past the DNS issue. They never made it easy tbvh (Bind is the thing to go for).

Thanks for creating this guide and it helped me to gain a little bit more digital freedom 🙂

The only tricky thing was the DNS setup (and figuring out what it meant what I was shown on the screen), but that was because I haven't done that before. A couple of screenshots from your Hostinger example (blurred out where needed) would have been helpful.

It all works now and I have to figure out what to install in @nextcloud now (hinthint for article #5).

Thanks, again 🙂

@rolandwoldt thank you Roland! You’re not the only person with this problem (heard from multiple people) so I may write a dedicated article about DNS records.

Happy self-hosting and keep me in the loop 😊

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Will do. Some other ideas for articles would be security topics (firewall settings on the VPS) or what to configure in Nextcloud
