So, Quad 9 stopped responding again. I'm not sure what's going on. I really want to keep using Quad 9, but the reliability has been pretty spotty lately. 9.9.9.9 was responding to ping, but not responding to queries -- both regular queries and DNS over TLS. Location: San Jose, CA.

Love the not-for-profit setup there, thats good stuff. But of course, it must be reliable to work for you…

FWIW, I can recommend NextDNS. Not free but worth it. I believe I've mentioned it a few times already 😅

Never use `ping` to troubleshoot DNS problems. Install a modern `dig` version (9.10.6 is centuries old). Try various switches (+tcp for example), but more importantly, first diagnose if you have a level 3 or 4 connectivity problem, before application level problems. Use `traceroute` absolutely with options `-t tcp` or `-t udp` to force proper protocol (default traceroute using ICMP is useless) and port 53. See where traffic breaks. Double check your firewall rules too. Inspect traffic.
