Reposting my Cheap Bastard's Guide to Monitoring Mastodon since I just launched my own Mastodon instance again and set this stuff up again.

This is going to come in handy because I am migrating to another box. Worried about migrating from one server to another, esp importing my database.

I'm following this guide

docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/mi…

Afterwards, I want to setup basic monitoring. Your guide seems straight forward.

I already started some of the migration. Getting the repositories, system packages and prerequisites setup.

I’ve done the migration quite a few times and it’s not too bad.

But my migrations have always been of my smaller instances so the database and media migrations weren’t too bad. That’s where the downtime is incurred waiting for data to be transferred between servers.

The actual dump/restore of the database is rather straightforward.

I'm going to clean my database really good first before I dump and restore; try to get it down. I'm also going to turn relays off for a few days prior to the dump. Media is in object storage.

Making a note to turn off relays for the next time I move things around. Great idea!

I want to set up open search instead of elastic search. Wondering if 'search deploy' will pick up everything old or how I deal with old es database. Lot of research. My Parkinson's doesn't help. Can only do stuff during certain windows throughout the day. Got a month before old hosting is due, so small steps. I'm migrating 3 different servers, 7 domains, low traffic & static, plus Mastodon to one 8 core, 12gb memory bare metal box.
