Wondering now if Gamelan is maybe quite commonly known in Australia? what would you say? (as you are like "neighbours").

In Poland it is very much not known, but our friend went to Indonesia to study it, and is running the Warsaw group, so it was closer for us.

i would say probably not widely known, I used to do a lot of folk festival work as a sound tech, and I may have broader musical interests than the _average_ Australian :

Probably the biggest publicity for Gamelan I've seen was a TV show by agent provocateur John Safran...
The musical guests on the show were always given some "world music" challenge - indie rock band Magic Dirt only had Gamelan to play their biggest hit :)
