Hmm.. I can see from your posts that you haven't been active for about 3 months? I would actually say that in that time Mastodon has become quite a lot more active and maybe you left when it was in an "activity trough", which is understandable.
I would recommend:
trying to be more active, both by 1) contributing to convos that you see on your feed and 2) by posting more, if you feel like it of course. But being active (and genuine, but I know you already do that) is really the first step to getting to feel the community here.
something that helped me is to create a separate account for neuroscience stuff, and really separate the neuro / work stuff from everything else, that way I can boost random things from my non-neuro account without fear of spamming my actual colleagues.
Follow hashtags that interest you, but you probably already know that
make sure to add Alt-text to all your images or your posts will be unlikely to get boosted
I'll add more here if I think of something! But also if you tell us what is missing for you we can try to find a fix!
@elduvelle @neuralreckoning also there are clients that provide a much nicer GUI than the stock mastodon client; I use phanpy.social (just go to the website) and it's great.
Oh actually I see that you use #Tusky already, that's what I use too and I find it OK, with admittedly some flaws (like not able to do quote-posts, not able to write threads, not showing you the post you're answering to when you're writing an answer...) It's not too bad though but maybe others will be able to suggest a better #MastodonApp for #Android? #Mastodon @paulgribble @neuralreckoning
@elduvelle @paulgribble I really like the web version for neuromatch.social because it has some cool features not present in many apps (like markdown, latex, fetch-all-replies). I prefer not to use apps on my phone anyway, they get to access a little bit too much personal info.
@neuralreckoning @elduvelle the web version of neuromatch.social is also quite fine/good as @neuralreckoning says. I rarely spend a lot of time using my phone I'm usually on an ipad or a laptop/desktop. Maybe ultimately mastodon will remain a niche of sorts but you know what that's still fine by me, I'm more of a 'my favourite small restaurant' kind of guy than a 'spend the day at the stadium' kind of guy anyway

💯
It's about the experience to me as well. I don't need a megaphone... I don't think I'm all that interesting 😉
