If something seems to good to be true, it often is

Like with the browser add-on #Honey from #PayPal

Something was itching

It seems the browser extension does replace affiliate references in links so PayPal gets commission on online purchases. Also replacing links from other affiliates

@stux⚡ Good thing I emptied and cancelled my PayPal account then, only yesterday.

@hans I can't go without unfort

It's currently the main source for donations and server bills etc

The modern web is TERRIBLE if it comes to sending money or paying bills

in reply to stux⚡

I'm not against this tactic if they are very transparent about it.

Like, if [good company or charity] said "Install our extension and we replace links around the web with our affiliate links so we make money" then maybe I'd be like "Cool."

But when it's done by a mega-corp in a sneaky way... then.. yeah. Not so cool.

I bloody knew it.

Although I didn't think of that avenue of making money

This browser extension has control over what discounts can be applied and not on stores that partner with #Honey

So if you find a better coupon value, #Honey can decide not to apply it or they just lie by giving lower discounts

"A win for everyone" they say.. but not the customer

in reply to stux⚡

Not gonna lie, I was just watching that video and thought "I wonder if stux has posted about this".

celebs of youtube are no different than celebs in hollywood... besides every other thing; they are also all scammers.
in reply to stux⚡

You never get something for nothing. I was only wrong in that I assumed they were tracking purchasing behavior and selling that.
in reply to stux⚡

to be fair, everything advertised by YouTubers is a scam

I've tried it few times and it never found me ANY discounts for any of the shops I use in Europe, not even Amazon.de. That was before PayPal bought it. So, for a potential to one day get a discount on something they monitor ALL the shops I visit and everything I browse and PayPal gets that info. Yeah, fuck no. I use PayPal here and there, I don't need to give them another data point.
