Look, seriously, do not visit the US. They’re going full fascist.

The EU should be releasing travel warnings at this point.

I am really disappointed that #opensource organisations like @pycon and @NumFOCUS have remained silent on this.

They position themselves as being diverse, inclusive, and supporting good things for everyone all over the globe - and they do generally live up to that aim.

But on this their silence is loud.

And that silence is not neutrality.

And imho, it is privilege that allows them to remain silent, to look the other way.

It can't be overstated how untrustworthy the mechanisms of government are here.

Seriously! Why do people assume it's safe for them to travel here? I don't get it. @aral
in reply to schrotthaufen

@schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter Exactly this. They are white.

As a non-white, it’s completely clear there are countries I wouldn’t travel to, and the U.S.A. has been one of them since 2 decades.

@meduz @schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter

Whatever "puy" means. But if it's just her own fault for being so stupid to travel there, why even bother!? This shouldn't be a matter of colour. Black folks know about such things happening and prepare. White folks don't. That's what we call privilege. Nevertheless, things like these shouldn't happen - not to her, nor to anyone. But they are, it's crazy and she's a victim of this madness. It's tragic and not her fault. So don't blame her for stupidity!

in reply to levampyre

@levampyre @meduz @schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter Sorry, I thought you meant victim blaming as in blaming the people in the US by telling folks not to visit there. I agree, it wasn’t her fault in the slightest. But, also, there’s merit in the note on privilege. I’ve heard too many white folks tell me how much they love going on holiday in Turkey or Dubai, etc., ambivalent about the human rights abuses.
in reply to Aral Balkan

@meduz @schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter

I agree that there should be more awareness of while privilege or cisgender privilege or hetero privilege or ablebodied privilege or rich privilege. But that's another fight.

in reply to Aral Balkan

there are plenty of protections in place for profits and the affluent but yeah its basically a police state where everything is held together by the threat of violence.
in reply to Aral Balkan

At this stage, it’s frankly irresponsible of any government not to issue travel advisories for travel to the US. How are these governments going to help their disappeared citizens?
in reply to Aral Balkan

I think Norway at one time did release a travel advisory.

At the moment I think the EU will keep things as is for as long possible. As much as I'd like us to burn the bridges and flip off the fascists there the timing just isnt there. I think that when Trump implements some tarrifs that would provide enough cover for @EUCommission

One of the first things the new #Carney government in Canada needs to do is reassess the previous assumption that #Canada can turn back people at the US border and expect them to be treated fairly by the #American #Regime.
in reply to Aral Balkan

#America is doing a great job of isolating themselves, hopefully that will accelerate the pace of its self destruction.
in reply to Aral Balkan

Not to defend the Trump administration, but immigration on the border has been like this for a long time.

Maybe things are getting worse currently (not sure where you'd get the metrics - but it wouldn't surprise me), but things were already pretty bad under Biden/Obama.

in reply to Aral Balkan

I've been to multiple conflict- and crisis-zones in my life and the US scares the living shit out of me.
in reply to Aral Balkan

The rest of the world, other than Russia, China and maybe North Korea, should be issuing travel warnings.
in reply to Aral Balkan

This is SOOO not normal. Usually at Border Crossings, if your visa is suspect or violated, you may be handcuffed and detained until they can expel you by placing you on the first flight or bus back to your home country, sometimes in hours or a day or two. The usual punishment for persons without criminal records is that you are expelled and barred for a few years reentry, not kept in the US in a prison.
in reply to Aral Balkan

so all couchsurfing and volunteering in the USA is now illegal for non-citizens over there apparently. disturbing how institutions can violate the most basic human rights if they have the power without having to be put on trial for this.
in reply to Aral Balkan

I am in the USA and I agree. I'm not inviting anyone from outside the country for the foreseeable future unfortunately.

(I have a rough idea what to do if a visitor has trouble with local law enforcement here, but you could be sent to a Federal or private location out of state where it would be hard for any host or their lawyer to communicate with you)

in reply to Don Marti

@dmarti I’m in the US and I’m afraid to leave because there is a fair chance, they will arrest me because of the gender on my passport when I try to come back.
in reply to Aral Balkan

@dmarti at least i’m not in texas *shudder*

Being trans in the US right now is bringing up a lot of homosexual / jew in 1937-1938 Germany vibes. I’m more scared with every passing month

in reply to masukomi

@masukomi yes, that's a huge issue (and one that on its own should rule out having events here—conference organizers need to pay attention and not just assume that no attendee is affected)
in reply to Billy Smith

@BillySmith @masukomi @dmarti yes, for these reasons, but be aware it has cost me about everything. And may not be permanent if they won’t let me stay.
in reply to Aral Balkan

...And in Canada...
Who knew that tightening our border would mean screening out members of the American fascist administration?

We have the world's longest undefended border between ourselves and the world's most heavily armed fascist state.

in reply to Aral Balkan

Germany has to their queer community, but it’s time for that to expand to everyone and for more EU members to issue it

I live pretty close and not only that, now I have to avoid contaminated produce once their regulations are removed

Also have to check on vaccines atatus/guidelines. And not Covid but the ones we got 30 or 50 years ago.

in reply to Aral Balkan

is time europe puts aside the politically correct and imposes a four years travel ban to the us ...

there is nothing here to see for the next four yers unless one wants to look at 1933 germany v2.0 ...

in reply to Aral Balkan

even before the 2nd Trump administration it wasn't a safe place to travel given all the guns, firearms and regular mass shootings. Now it is really not a good idea to travel to the MAGA country. I would go to #Canada 🇨🇦 instead for holidays and vacations.
