PBS: Older Americans say it's a good time to find a job. Younger people aren't buying it

Observation:
I was just having this conversation with someone who'd fall well into that 'older' category. (For reference, I fall between the two listed age ranges)

The argument being made at me was that they see "now hiring" signs up all the time, ergo there are jobs to be had.
But when I asked if any of those jobs they saw advertised would even pay rent, they spluttered & said that wasn't the question.

But it kind of IS, right? Lots of unfilled jobs != good job market.

Oh it’s an absolutely terrible time to be a new college graduate. I’d hate to be someone with a fresh diploma in Computer Science (my undergrad) or any similar field. I think entry level jobs in nearly every field are being replaced with AI (whether AI is actually replacing that productivity is beside the point). Even at the senior end of the spectrum, I don’t think I could replace my current job at similar wages right now.

My new prediction for the next 20 years is expect a lot of people being herded into low-paying gig jobs as some form of AI minder, which in many cases will involve a pace too fast to actually review all the work properly, but that person will be the one blamed when shit goes down.

Thanks for this. I don't recall hearing the phrase "moral crumple zone". This perfectly encapsulates what I was thinking, the idea that the human is placed sacrificially to protect the system (AI software, business, senior management) from being held accountable.
