Regardless of the arguments for or against, the fact that any government is constitutionally capable of cancelling elections is problematic. The UK perhaps needs a written constitution?
@theaardvark That's a reasonable argument against holding two sets of elections. I'm just concerned that the government has the ability to decide, rather than it being some statutory thing? (So, not so much about this specific case.)
@FediThing An election for LDC in 2027 would cost at least £100k. Why incur that expense just to elect a group of councillors who won't be able to make any significant decisions?
@FediThing @theaardvark I’m not sure whether it would require primary legislation or if the government has the power to do it under secondary legislation, which would be a worry in itself. I note that the Electoral Commission is opposed to it:
