Songs that Encapsulate Eras
I'm not trying to pick out the best or the most significant for a wide swath of the population. I'm reflecting on my decades of life & choosing one tune. If the years were reduced to a song-length montage these are the songs I would currently use for each decade:

2020s β€” [too soon to tell]
2010s β€” Frank Ocean Nights
2000s β€” Modest Mouse Float On
1990s β€” The Breeders Cannonball
1980s β€” Prince When Doves Cry
1970s β€” Gloria Gaynor I Will Survive

not going to deep think this, just first song that comes to mind because it’s probably the most accurate anyway

1970s - CW McCall Convoy
1980s - Annie Lennox Here Comes the Rain Again
1990s - The Black Crowes Hard to Handle
2000s - Cowboy Mouth Jenny Says
2010s - Tom Cochrane Life Is a Highway
2020s - Marc Cohn Walking in Memphis

I loved the South in the mid-late 90s, although wasn't as big a fan once Jacqui left. I saw Paul and Jacqui together as a duo a few (maybe 5) years ago, playing a mixture of their new stuff, some South songs and a couple of Housemartens. Absolutely fantastic gig!

I didn't even attempt to stay on top of this after 1999, but that's really my own fault. Nothing to do with the music itself.

I love it here so much! I originally conceived of this music post for Instagram, where I would have a different story panel for each song with the music playing... but I just don't care about posting anything there!

Sorry but if you want to encapsulate the 70s for real the only choice is Afternoon Delight.

- It was polished but still ugly.
- It acknowledged the sexual revolution but made it boring.
- It sounded like the suburbs looked.
- It was cringe in real time but seems kinda funny now.
- It's impossible to see or hear and not think "What the hell were people thinking back then?"
