Folks are talking about Maggie Smith & I can understand that many are fans of her work & her personality. OK now is when I detour. I am an American who feels great disgust for my country in most things. But perhaps I am a true American radical patriot when it comes to one thing. I absolutely do not understand anyone using titles such as Sir or Dame. I think it's gross. It is not comparable to an earned title like Doctor. That is all.

OK.
The UK has a muddle of comedy titles, patronage, and deserved recognition. I try to celebrate recognition where it's deserved, despite the comedy titles.
One friend of mine got a medal (with a comedy name) for leading change after whistleblowing on corruption. I celebrate the public recognition of that part of her achievements, despite the award being named after an Empire.
Do you know any good systems of national awards for public service?

@Tony_Meredith Yes, every other country that does not use titles.

For example, the US bestows a number of honors by the presidents, the congress, and the Kennedy Center for artists. These are subject to criticism and bias of course. The receipt of such awards would be noted in an obituary. They do not prepend to a person's name forever.

To clarify, if citizens of a nation choose to use titles that's their business. The US only does it for UK celebrity worship. I don't like it.
