It feels like some folks think democracy amounts to doing whatever the majority of those who voted in an election want. That’s not democracy. That’s tyranny of the majority.

If your society votes to start eating babies, you don’t start eating babies. You protect your babies with your life and you fight tooth and nail until you rid your society of baby eaters so you don’t end up as a nation of cannibals.

Democracy is determined by the will of the majority. It only becomes tyranny when the majority of people choose fascism. Oh, like this time!
in reply to Aral Balkan

democracy has always been the tyranny of the majority, that's why it never convinced me as a system.

counterpoint: this is exactly the anti-choice position.
A sane democracy builds in controls, but those controls have to be broad enough that they get majority support, a majority of ppl have to agree that they are getting most of what they want.
Otherwise your solution for ‘the tyranny of the majority’ is a ‘tyranny of the minority’.
In an odd way, that’s what kind of what representative democratic is. We don’t choose on issues, we choose the ppl we trust to decide.
in reply to Aral Balkan

I mean democracy is "tyranny of the majority", the issue is that for a democracy to be actually beneficial, everyone needs to be properly educated. They need to know what a 20% tariff will actually do to the economy.

Another issue with the US democracy is that different parts of our population despise each other. So resources are spent just screwing with different parts of the population, resulting in a bad outcome for everyone. Currently, there is no "unified voice" of the people.

If the majority of your country votes to ban the use of lead connection pipes ; don't rip out your plumbing. Start buying all the lead pipes you can and fight to keep them until you rid society of lead-haters and don't end up with a nation of lead-poisoning haters.
in reply to Aral Balkan

I don't know. At this point we may as well eat our children. Keep them from having to and we really are anyway... Let's not just dismiss what could be a real answer to our problems.

what do you do if a significant portion of your population want to murder unborn babies?

in reply to Sapphire Star, Aryanne Appreciator

@sapphire 1. They’re not unborn babies, they’re fetuses
2. You don’t do anything because the decision of whether or not to abort a fetus belongs to the person whose body the fetus is in
3. You may fuck off now with your “your body, my choice” crap.
