how can I help? I will donate but I would like to also help with programming. Where are you guys at?
in reply to pixelfed

Is there a governance structure in place or will there be one in the near future? (Akin to the non-profit organization that is planned for Mastodon?)
in reply to El Duvelle

@elduvelle @Mikaleb that's true but everybody wants something for free. As long as ads aren't using mined meta data I find them a tolerable alternative to subscriptions.
in reply to Adrian

Maybe, but again, nobody here wants ads. The clearest advantage of this place over all the for-profit ones is that it has no ads and I hope it stays like that for ever.

Also, it's not that we need ads, there are other ways to support our instances, like donations, contributing some time, funding by grants or other no-strings-attached sources.

The attention-sucking, consumerist, privacy-invading ad system that people are getting so used to is not the only way to go!

@acs @elduvelle @Mikaleb
So you won’t kick in say $5 to keep the place free from the fast track to fascistic influence?

Advertising is built on the same foundation as propaganda. And the propagandists have been exploiting that infra for decades.

in reply to Mikaleb

@Mikaleb @acs @elduvelle
I support my admins.

I chip in €20 every few months to help with ops and upkeep.

Not everyone does.

Not everyone is expected to.

That’s democratic.

If next week I were to kick in €10k, I would be doing so only to help those who can’t contribute to the care and feeding of my instance. That’s democratic.

If I kicked in €10k so that my voice would be amplified and so that I could control what others see, that’s authoritarian.

in reply to Aphrodite ☑️ :boost_ok:

@Aphrodite @acs @elduvelle but if you exclude de facto people who can't pay, you eliminate their voice. That's why my original take was that if participating is not enough, random ads can be good enough, solving the funding problem and the targeted ads

where are your servers physically located?

Edit1: Let me rephrase, where is the pixelfed.social server located?
Edit2: Where are all the servers listed here pixelfed.org/servers physically located?
Edit3: Traceroute command seems to give me the last IP address for the route to pixelfed.social being in California and the last IP address for pixelfed.de, being, naturally, in Germany.

Be cool for Edmonton to be known for something again. *looks at Bioware* ...uh, something good.
in reply to pixelfed

More to the point, even if you sold out, the network would go on without you.
in reply to pixelfed

I wonder if these people or companies who keep trying to acquire Pixelfed realize that they could just create their own Pixelfed server.
in reply to pixelfed

At the end you need to find a way to monetize it to wrap it up around a reliable organisation. Sorry not to be deluded
in reply to pixelfed

is there a guide for pixelfed for the non-tech savvy? On eg how to choose instance?
in reply to pixelfed

any way to still get an account, or will it now be only available to backers? I've signed up a week ago without any followup to both loops and pixelfed.art and not sure what's the status.
in reply to pixelfed

Let's work on that kickstarter/Mastodon integration. From a browser, I clicked the link, wanted to be notified when the kickstarter opens, and it asks me if I want to login with Google or Apple or email 😭
But I do look forward to trying out and supporting pixelfed !
in reply to pixelfed

You can tell them they can sponsor things by donating.
in reply to pixelfed

I will give to the Kickstarter. We need apps for the ppl, by the ppl. No oligarch billionaires allowed unless they want to kick in to the Kickstarter. We don't want or need their input or influence. We just need their money.
in reply to pixelfed

Name and shame.

They want to operate in the shadows. Force sunlight upon them.

in reply to pixelfed

please tell me more about the Pixelfed Foundation.

Where can I find info about its bylaws, members?

in reply to pixelfed

EW.

Does anyone remember "Freehand" illustration software. No. Adobe bought it and put it in a closet.

in reply to pixelfed

Petitions? As in reverse crowd funding? As in, you know, this: blenderdumbass.org/petitions
in reply to pixelfed

I just signed up for the Kickstarter notification.

Also, thank you for fixing my Loops login problem. :)

in reply to pixelfed

Please put up a web page for all people who want to make offers... a form to fill out and a payment processor - for the non-refundable buy out application processing fee of $10,000 per entry.
in reply to pixelfed

Funny how they keep trying huh! :bloblaugh:

I started ignoring those mails a long time ago 💪

in reply to pixelfed

Would there be an advantage or protection if you registered it (or part of it) as a non-prof? Just wondering, I don't know.
in reply to pixelfed

I downloaded the app and registered but when I try to login I get this message. Also, there are so many servers, which one do I choose?
in reply to pixelfed

Are there any other ways to donate besides Kickstarter? just wondering! i love the platform and want to support :)
in reply to pixelfed

Wish you could get it working smoothly, often can't get on and when I do usually sluggish. I post things there that will not appear on Masto. Seems full of glitches. Done posting there until things smooth out. Do support you though and hope you get it sorted.
in reply to pixelfed

Have you considered creating a limited company that doesn't own anything of value but looks as if it does, getting half a billion in VC money, donating it all to the Pixelfed Foundation, and then having the LLC declare bankruptcy?
in reply to pixelfed

these posts sound a little bit like blackmail to me. You either support us or we sell. I believe you deserve some financial support and stuff but giving money to non profit organisation that owns Pixelfed would be a little bit more welcoming for me. Did you think about creating such foundation with a little bit more distributed ownership which would ensure that Pixelfed will not be sold to VC even if one persons opinion (eg. danesup) changes?

in reply to pixelfed

If you need to, I’d rather have ads than corporate ownership and an unfederated platform. Just please no tracking/targeting. Let us choose our ad categories.
in reply to pixelfed

I logged in on the site OK, but it won't accept my card details.
in reply to pixelfed

@catsalad do you see that you are the profile in their Kickstarter? It tracks because you are one of the four people I follow on Loops so far.
