Meanwhile, the City Council has been actively suppressing affordable housing measures—and, at the same time, pushing bills to criminalize the presence of unhoused people and sex workers in large swaths of the city. Black residents make up just 8% of Seattle, yet 25% of homeless individuals in the city are African-American.

I'm a local Black activist who has been involved with mutual aid alongside the Black Lives Memorial Garden, and helped found the recall effort against Mayor Jenny Durkan in the wake of 2020 protests. I am dedicated to holding our elected officials responsible to their duties.

As a part of this effort, I attended a small protest at the home of Bob Kettle on September 15, 2024.

At the latest City Council meeting, Kettle had called the Seattle Police Department to harass public commenters speaking out against racist, transphobic laws under debate—after shutting the commentary session short because he didn't like what the people of Seattle had to say. Kettle lives in Queen Anne, historically a "Sundown Town" area of Seattle known to be treacherous toward Black people. I was the only Black attendee at this event.

Within minutes of beginning the peaceful protest, angry white neighbors swarmed the group of concerned citizens that had gathered to challenge Kettle's harmful actions. They argued, yelled, and belittled me and my comrades. Then, without warning, one man pushed someone out of his way to grab a heavy, rolling speaker from the ground (which wasn't in use). He then hurled it at me, striking me in the head and causing a gaping head wound that bled for hours.

The other neighbors—instead of offering assistance—proceeded to obstruct us, protect the assailant's identity, and scream with the energy of an angry mob. Their constant refrain was "You don't belong here."

I am still recovering from a concussion, and taking antibiotics to prevent a brain infection. The assault itself was a brutal event that easily could have turned into a modern lynching—a terrifying possibility for my partner and the newborn the we just welcomed in August.

I intend to press criminal charges and file a civil lawsuit against the assailant and accomplices, which will require significant funding for legal fees. I am also fundraising to help cover the costs of lost work during recovery, hiring additional help with my child, and the extensive time that will go into this battle. All of your support will help me continue my vital work as a local activist, and ensure that a violent act of modern-day racism does not go unanswered.
