I'm hearing good things about SOVL : Fantasy Warfare. It's on Steam, free to play the basic version and is basically 90's White Dwarf battle report gaming.

the only downside so far is the absolutely atrocious "ai" art.

@pixelworship it's all very derivative, and the poor AI art increases that sense. But the gameplay itself works I think.

Absolutely! I haven't played it that much yet, but/and I put it on my laptop so I can give it a go on the train or whatever.
