With all due DISrespect for the current Israeli government, and while I oppose the Israeli strike on Iran for both ideological and practical reasons: How is an Israeli airstrike on Iran, limited to military targets, an escalation? Iran has launched two massive air strikes on Israel.

I agree with you @Noam Bergman, unless we count every retaliation like an escalation, then I supposed it would make sense

Under international law, Israel has the right to defend itself because the attack was carried out by Iran. However, this was in retaliation for an Israeli assassination attempt.

I think we have reached a point in the conflict where everyone should realize that every further bomb or missile will lead to a further escalation. Israel can weaken its enemies, but it cannot defeat them. If the goal of Israel is to exist safely and recognized in the region, this goal will probably not be achieved by force of arms.

We know from history that every terrorist killed only creates more besides the suffering of the innocent and revenge.

The list of provocations is long. Most went unanswered:

iranprimer.usip.org/blog/2022/…

This does not include provocations by Israel's obvious proxy, the US, which are multiple, including the assassination of Qasem Soleimani.

And finally, the unprecedented infanticide and industrial massacre in Gaza, the West Bank, and now Lebanon, has gone unimpeded by any capable state on the planet. Without all of the acts of sabotage, assassination, and bombings of Iranian interests and military assets outside and inside its borders, a massive strike on Kikestan begs the initiative of any decent state.

Unfortunately, there is only one ... for now.

Until recently, I thought there were two wars likely to grow into WWIII: Ukraine v. Russia and Israel v. Iran. If Trump wins, I think he'll actually help Russia win over Ukraine, and he'll help expand the the Israel-Iran conflict into WWIII. This could result in a lot of violence here in the US too.

You've forgotten India vs Pakistan and China vs Taiwan.

North against South Korea is also getting hot again :(

There are many forgotten wars in Africa. Refugees from these wars can destabilize EU 🇪🇺 :(

But are all of these wars equally likely to become WWIII? A world war is a war with multiple nations fighting on each side, and each of those nations fully mobilized. Who would fight with India against Pakistan? And who would help Pakistan?

Israel, on the other hand, has many enemies and at least one very powerful friend.

The war in Ukraine is part of the wider conflict between Putin, who wants to make Russia Great Again, and NATO+USA. If NATO makes Ukraine a member, every NATO member country is obligated to help it. A short time ago I thought it was very unlikely that Putin would find any friends to help him against Ukraine, but now he has!

I'm going to post about Georgia later this morning. That's also part of the Putin vs western Europe conflict.
