This might be my favourite slide on quantum computing, ever. From Peter Gutmann at #AUSCERT
in reply to Lesley Carhart

When I was a post doc, part of my job was to point out when my boss (also my former advisor) was violating the second law of thermodynamics. We are now in the same boat with quantum computing. Unfortunately, things are a lot more subtle in the quantum realm.

AGI will figure it out, although it might also benefit from the same analysis strategy.

oh yeah! That one was good! I think the version I saw is up on the Kawaiicon NZ YouTube channel
in reply to Lesley Carhart

Yes, be wary of that. Cold Fusion, though, is right around the corner.

his talks are always great! I remember vividly the moment in a talk he gave at BSidesCBR 2018 when he talked about the primary purpose of a fuse…

wasn't there a paper on iirc a c64, and a dog being faster at some "quantum algorithm" than a quantum computer?

Shameless plug alert: see also eprint.iacr.org/2025/1237, by Peter and yours truly.

@sten my third law is that everyone actually competent at Complicated Things tells everyone it’s complicated, and go have a beer

@sten

I knew Peter from the sci.math.crypt newsgroup moons ago. This paper is a hoot.

and folks in this thread: At the risk of feeding myself to the lions, may I suggest care? Gutmann's views on QC are funny to watch, but prone to misinterpretation (although I have to say, this slide in particular is... refreshingly sober?)

That’s a fair approach, though if your threat model includes national adversaries who plan to capture now and decrypt later, moving to post-quantum cryptography now makes sense.
