I’m sorry, but I’m not going to be able to host #pancakescon this year and I’m going to have to cut off mentoring after currently registered appointments. I hope I’m somewhere safe and stable to resume them in the future. All SANS classes, clinics, and announced talks are on through April. I will not be making any cons beside those in the foreseeable future.

There was this eerie moment driving home from work late last night where turning into my neighborhood I passed a convoy of slow rolling Trump flag vehicles with very conspicuously armed passengers. I slept on my dad’s floor last night. I know exactly what their point was.

after Brexit here in the UK the nasties came forward and there was a sizeable increase in hate crime. I feel for you.

@georgek I keep forgetting that we are on the timeline where Sandy Hook didn’t move the needle.

*sends hugs from southern France*

I know, every other week there is a story on the news about it. unless only a handful of people being killed, in which case it's just BAU, hence not newsworthy.
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

please stay safe. The world can not lose you. I'm sorry this country is so full of crap humans if you can call them human. 😢

when I was walking through Toronto Union Station I saw someone that looked like you at first glance, but then realized it wasn't you... Hopefully one day it will be

Do what you can.

We're IRL strangers & I gather you could kick my ass, but if some bizarre twist of fate gives you the impression I can help in some way - don't think twice.

@pshread I just don’t they realize that we are armed and ready as well. Not being an alarmist, but there are veterans on our side that will respond if needed. It’s a shame I even have to say it. Have no fear.
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

@pshread good. That’s the way it should be. But by their impression, they think we will just lay down.
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

You probably won’t see this, but I’ve followed you for a long time because we both work cyber in critical infrastructure. Anyway, the story you are telling is chilling. Retired military, martial arts instructor, gun owner, and profession incident handler - and yet cannot feel safe in their country! It makes me mad, sad, and afraid all at the same time. I welcomed COVID into the global picture drinking scotch in Perth after a trip to some large OT sites. I hope you can make a new home in Australia. I really do. I’m sorry for your loses.
in reply to vpz

@vpz it’s not so much not feeling like I can’t defend myself from attack. It’s that my legal rights are going to be demolished and our society is going to lose stuff like medical care and environmental protections, food safety, weather services. That’s harder to get around unless you’re off grid. And I don’t want to be gaslit into thinking what they do to vulnerable people is okay.
@vpz
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

Yes, yes. That is my point. Someone who is eminently qualified to defend is having to make these difficult decisions. That is the rub.
in reply to vpz

@vpz I’ve held a lot of very talented, smart, tough people sobbing in bathrooms and hallways over the last 48 hours.

it’s heartbreaking. Thank you again for sharing. Your story helps make it real. Real consequences. I’m tired so not very eloquent. It’s helping us grieve.
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

Just woke and saw the news. I'm so sorry, dearheart. I have nothing to offer but best wishes (I'd offer a floor to sleep on if I had one). And thanks for your generous posts -- I've gained a great deal of context and tactical hope from you. 🍀 ✊ 🥰
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

Disappointing as you've helped a lot of people but your personal safety and well-being need to be your first priority.
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

Thank you for all you have been doing for the community. Now is a time that you need to take care of yourself.
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

*hugs* you do so much for the community; please take care of yourself and know you have so much love and support out there
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

Thinking of you, Lesley. I'm so sorry. Obviously got an outsider view here, but i'm struggling to understand why this has happened. Again. :/
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

I’m sorry too. I hope your plan works out, and if there is anything I can do, I am on board to help.
in reply to Lesley Carhart :unverified:

You've given so much & so freely to the community for so many years! Even great leaders must take time to do what's right for you. Take care & be strong for you now, #pancakescon can come back if & when it's time again. Pause & recharge. There's more left on the other side in time. We care. #selfcare

Take care of yourself and I hope you can find safety again. I’m sorry this country let you down. 😢
