(My favourite was Where Owls Know My Name by Rivers of Nihil)

in reply to Paul Barker • • •@pbarker Me too. For me Esoteric Malacology is probably the best (melodic) Death Metal album of that decade. I do like WOKMN too and I think Andy joining RoN “for real” was a move in the right direction.
I think the joining of members is part of why Slugdge haven’t finished anything new. They released an album/year when it was just Matt and Kev in their bedrooms, and then massive success and the (eventual) joining of bassist/drummer (and a famous one at that) I think upset the world order a bit too much. Pandemic and other health (mental) issues contributed too of course. Still, when they’ll release something it’ll probably be awesome.

I think Tarot by Aether Realm would be my favourite of the decade in terms of melodic death.

Wintersun I respect but have never really gotten in to. As a fly-by comment this sounds like what I thought Ghost should sound like if only going by looks. Some good song-writing here (the area where I think Slugdge is masterfully good too).
I come from Meshuggah, Vildhjärta, Humanity’s Last Breath, Whitechapel and Black Dahlia angle so this is unusually symphonic and sing-along for me, but so far it works. Already been tapping along with my foot so my colleague asked me if I was holding a gig soon. 😄
