Israeli #Knesset vote on #UNRWA set to deepen Palestinian suffering

Source: news.un.org/en/story/2024/10/1…

Monday’s vote by the Israeli Knesset banning the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) contradicts principles of the UN Charter, violates #Israel’s obligations under international law, and sets a dangerous precedent, the head of the Agency, Philippe #Lazzarini has warned. The UN chief pledged later he would take the issue to the General Assembly.

This greatly increases the probability that masses of people will starve.

Terrible news. There is justified criticism about UNRWA, which acts very differently from UNHCR and in some cases in opposition to UNHCR's principles. It also looks like a small number of UNRWA staff played a role in the 7 October attacks. But removing UNRWA without a replacement in a time of great need is inexcusable.

Palestinian genocide is looming quickly ... and we're powerless !

I have seen no evidence that UNRWA played a role in 7/10.

@Mulkurul there isn't actually. UNRWA has arguably its problems, but what large organisation can say that everything and everyone is under perfect, coherent control at all times?

UNRWA as an organisation didn't play a role in 7 Oct, but Israel accused about a dozen people of being a part of it; UNRWA fired those named. I don't know if any evidence of more widespread involvement.

When I say UNRWA has problems, I don't mean organisational imperfections. I mean things like they apply policies that enable passing trauma from generation to generation, something that UNHCR works to prevent.

My point is there are legitimate concerns about UNRWA's function, but simply banning them without a replacement is unjustified and hugely harmful.
