Time to resurrect an idea that I had two years ago:

Buffer servers on the Fediverse that federate with Threads.

Specifically, servers that help people leave Threads, and migrate elsewhere on the Fediverse. Of course, we’d need to convince people on Threads to turn on federation.

Of course, we’d also need a means to import their old Threads posts to the Fediverse.

And we’d need to allow room for those who’d like to cut out Meta entirely via defederation.

Instead of embracing Threads, or ignoring them—think of a solid migration plan. Personally, I’m not doing it. I’m just putting this thought out there.

A couple of years ago, I proposed the following:

Build a migration path from Meta/Facebook/Threads to the Fediverse, and place ads on Facebook, to let people migrate to the Fediverse very easily.

The ad will compare the Fediverse ( uncensored, free ) with Facebook ( censored, closed ) and advertise the benefits of openness.

On clicking the ad, the user will optionally be asked a few questions, and be matched with a Fediverse instance based on their interests. The user can also skip the questions, and choose a random instance.

The user will also be offered the option to join a "Migration Registry" to re-connect with their Facebook friends on the Fediverse.

The user's profile will be migrated to the chosen Fediverse instance, along with all data, and contacts.

If they used the "Migration Registry", the user will be reconnected with all their Facebook friends, who also opted into the registry during the Migration. Re-union in Heaven, or the Fediverse ( close enough ) 😜.

"we’d need to convince people on Threads to turn on federation. "
It is the most difficult part. I've been trying with my followers for months, but because of the stupid algorithm, I'm not even sure they my posts.

@DavidBHimself That can be a selling point: leave Threads, and you’ll be able to see your friends posts more easily.
