Good morning Fedi friends.

I just updated this post from March. It used to say:

"Year 4 (2026)
I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication"

Since I am fully invested in mesh experiments, I thought it deserved a refresh.

Spoiler alert: Year 5 will probably be about learning #FreeBSD 😅

watching your journey has been really fun, I have to admit. It has partially motivated me to help others do the same. Technology needlessly intimidates a lot of people. Doesn't mean that what you've achieved so far isn't something to be proud of. To the next 4 years 🥂

@Huubje aw thank you! this has been so much fun. hoping to pass all this knowledge to my child - so far she's more interested in the LEGO structures I built for my antennas than the Heltec units themselves 😅

@Huubje I think if I put colorful stickers or do a bedazzled version of the repeater/companion the interest will shoot up because... she's 5 years old 😅

bedazzle away then! Any interest is valid and potentially fun and rewarding. She doesn't need to become an engineer, even just having fun and being able to play with stuff like this is more than most people will ever do

FreeBSD is not hard to learn, especially if you're already familiar with other Unix-like systems. I spent a weekend in 2023 setting up FreeBSD on my laptop and porting all my dotfiles, and been using it as a daily driver ever since.

From a developer's perspective, FreeBSD's source code, both kernel and userland, is generally simpler and more hackable than its Linux counterparts. And the maintainers are pleasant to work with - they are friendly and patient towards outside contributors.

We are apparently in-sync. Me, this morning:

1. Waiting for a delivery of a nice LoRA antenna upgrade so that I might actually be able to reach the nearest Meshcore repeater, and

2. Contemplating revisiting FreeBSD & OpenBSD after many years of Linux, mostly due to arstechnica.com/ai/2026/07/lin…
